Competitions 101
* Remember - All level 4&up gymnasts are required to participate in a minimum of 3 invitational meets. All gymnasts who qualify for Championship meets are VERY HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to participate. Our goal is to place as a team in all meets possible.. the more gymnasts we have compete, the better chance we have. *
Here is a quick run down of things you should know about meets;
- THE MORE TIMES YOU COMPETE THE BETTER YOU GET!
Competition experience is very important in gymnastics. No amount of practice can help you the way meets do. Most kids are very nervous at first, again, the more you do the better you get!
- Gymnastics is both a team and individual sport. Although gymnasts can place individually on all of the events our ultimate goal is to place as a team. The more kids we have compete at each level, the better chance we have at a team award!
- Scoring; gymnasts get scored on their routines and the execution of the skills in their routines. (what it looks like - tight legs, pointed toes, pulled up arms, lifted chin etc.) The highest possible score is a 10.0 and the lowest possible score is a 0.0. The total score of all the events (Vault, Bars, Beam and Floor) added together makes up a gymnasts All Around Score.
- Team Score; the team score is calculated by taking the top 3 gymnasts scores on each events and adding them up. A gymnast can contribute to the team score on one event, two events, three events or all events. Typically there are more than 3 girls per level and only the highest three on EACH event would be used for the team score.
Dual Meets - Dual meets are competitions held between two teams. These meets are used as "qualifiers" (individual placement only - a chance for gymnasts to gain the All Around score needed for Championship Meets)
Tri - Meets - Tri meets are competitions held between three teams. These meets are used as qualifiers.
Invitational Meets - Turkey Tumble, Snowflake, Flip Flop, Sweetheart & Shamrock. At these meets both individual and team placements are awarded.
Championship Meets - ( Leagues, States, Regionals, Nationals)
League Championships .. the only meet that all gymnasts are eligable to attend. You do not need to qualify for this meet. **We highly encourage ALL gymnasts attend this meet!**
Tri - State Championships (MA, NH, RI) ... can be attended by those gymnasts who have achieved the minimum qualifying all around score atleast once. ** We highly encourage ALL gymasts attend this meet as the title for State Champions is at stake!
Regional Championships (we are Region 6 - MA, NH, RI, ME, VT, CT, NY) .. can be attended by those gymnasts who have achieved the minimum qualifying all around score atleast twice. ** We highly encourage ALL gymnasts attend this meet as the title for Regional Champions is at stake.**
National Championships (all of the United States) .. the last meet of the season. This meet is the hardest to qualify for. Individual awards are given to level 5*,6& 7 and team awards are given to level 8&9. Nationals are being held in SAN DIEGO, CA this year!!
* Level 5 gymnasts will no longer be attending Nationals. Only the level 5's that attended last year are eligable to go.
